Katong Laksa is a variant of laksa lemak inspired by the Straits Chinese who live in the precinct of Katong in Singapore. It has a spicy soup stock the colour of a flaming sunset, flavoured with coconut milk and dried shrimp, and topped with ingredients like cockles, prawns and fishcake. The noodles are normally cut up into smaller pieces so that the entire dish can be eaten with a spoon alone, without chopsticks or a fork.

In 1979, Mr Thian Boon Hua started a small stall in Chinatown serving Cantonese chicken rice. Building upon the popularity of his silky white sauce chicken rice and emphasis on quality service, he rallied his family members to establish Boon Tong Kee’s first restaurant at Balestier Road in 1983.

In its second year of operation, the restaurant started to garner rave reviews and accolades from industry luminaries and customers. Before long, outlets at MacPherson Road, Whampoa West, River Valley Road, Cheong Chin Nam Road and East Coast Road followed in rapid succession.

The company diversified its operations in 1999 to include "Zi Char" (home-style cooked food) and eateries. From the traditional Balestier Road outlet to the upscale River Valley branch, Boon Tong Kee has enthralled Singaporeans and tourists alike with its delectable food and friendly staff.

My Grandfather was friends with the owner of this restaurant so whenever we walked past it my grandfather would always go in and say hi. Sometimes the owner would give me small snacks to eat as well.

AlibabaR The Hawker Bar is situated along East Coast Road, opposite 112 Katong shopping mall in an old-school colonial shophouse.

It is the brainchild of owner KC Tan, who has decided to modernise and rebrand the previous coffee shop that was in its place six years ago. The hawker bar’s name AlibabaR, pays homage to the original name of the coffee shop, Alibaba Eating House.

This stall in the basement food court of Katong Shopping Centre is simply known as the Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice stall. It is a self-service stall. Be prepared to wait in line. Every order comes with a big bowl of tasty soup full of vegetables and you can help yourself to their archar. The chicken is not boneless but is aromatic, succulent and, yes, delicious.
